Snow peas just starting out

Snow peas are always gonna be welcome in any garden that I plant.  They perform just as well down here as they do for Dad back in New York.  They definately prefer the cooler weather but fare pretty well when it warms up.  Speaking of warming up....we tied a record high of 85* a few days ago!  It's been so nice that the neighbors were swimming in their pools...in January!

Something I'm proud of is the succession planting that's going on over here.  That top picture is a second crop of peas planted AFTER the first crop.  Now that's some A+ gardening!

Making A Meal

We always joke that this is our snacking garden, that there isn't enough food at one time to make a meal.  Well, we were slow in getting there but we made it happen.  We just eat all of the greens together!  I can't believe that we didn't think of that sooner.

So, here are all of the veggies that we would cook together and add to our meal. There's broccoli, snow peas and Chinese broccoli.  They all go well together and you end up with a veggie medly.  We steam and then saute with garlic. YUM!  We were on a roll and didn't buy veggies from the store for a long while. It feels so rewarding to eat from your own garden.

Peas Please

The peas have done so well in the later months of the winter garden.  I planted the same peas from the same seeds in the early fall months and they were very weak and spindly with a few anemic pods.

Now that it's cooled off, the vines are robust and hearty. I love watching them grow and the flowers are one of my favorites.   So much so, that I wanted sweet peas in my wedding bouquet. 

Peas remind me of my parents garden in zone 6a. I remember being young and picking and eating peas right off the vine. It's almost like a treasure hunt because the pea pods are the same exact color of the vines and leaves, tricky to find but awesome when you do.  Like the rest of the garden, the peas are arriving in snack size quantities, not enough for a meal but maybe that's for the best since they're so tasty right off the vine!
